Missa brevis (1958 / 2006)

Choreographie: José Limón

’In the ruins of Poland I found a dance.'(José Limňn)
“He called it an act of faith. I think that he recognized at that point that dance was the way he expressed his spirituality." (Nina Watt)

Premiered in 1958, Missa Brevis is a piece for 22 dancers set to Missa Brevis in Tempore Belli by Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály and is considered one of Limón’s masterpieces. Missa Brevis was written by Kodály at the end of World War II during the siege of Budapest, and is a Mass in a time of war. Limón's choreography depicts humanity rising up after near-destruction; it is a memento to cities destroyed during World War II and to the human qualities that compel the spirit to rise up in hope and to survive.
